Snapchat - the next social media marketing tool for your veterinary business?

Have you considered a Snapchat account for your veterinary business?

There are two things I need to admit upfront……firstly, that using the social media platform ‘Snapchat’ is NOT for every veterinary practice, and secondly, I’m no Snapchat expert – at all – not even a little bit of an expert. BUT I can see that it could be a great marketing tool for the right business.

So what is Snapchat?

Snapchat is an app you can use to share photos, videos and send messages. I know this sounds similar to all other social media platforms but there’s one big difference and that’s the length of time that every post or ‘Snap’ lasts. Snapchat videos are limited to 10 seconds and Snaps posted to a user’s timeline only last for 24 hours – although there is now a provision to save the snap to a new Memories feature.

Why does the brief life of a Snap or post make a difference?

The fact is no one expects you to be posting a masterpiece especially as your post is only going to be around for a day. Unlike Instagram where many posts are carefully curated, everyone expects to see more candid type moments on Snapchat.

And this is what I think makes Snapchat perfect for a veterinary practice.

Your days are filled with cute, interesting, funny or sad moments. But although you may not always have time to put together an informative Facebook Post or beautiful Instagram image, you do have the time to whip out your phone and Snap away.

Arggghhhhh ……Nooooo …..not another thing I have to worry about.

Which leads me back to my first admission at the beginning – I know Snapchat may not be for everyone – but I do think it can be a powerful tool for some veterinary practices. Which businesses in particular depends on your target clients.

Some stats from the Hubspot ‘How to Use Snapchat for Business’:

  • There are 150 million daily users which now surpasses Twitter
  • Millennials make up 70% of users and reports indicate that 45% of these are in the 18 – 24 year old group but stretching to the 35+ market as well – which really proves that Snapchat is no longer just for teenagers.  
  • Snapchat’s engagement rates now surpass both Facebook and Twitter with users spending 25 – 30 minutes on the platform each day

So what’s the overall take-home message?

If even part of your veterinary practice target market include Millennials or even up to 35 year olds, then maybe you should start dipping your toe into the Snapchat water.
