The Secret to Achieving Laser Like Focus in 2012

Focus Wordle

A few weeks ago I posted a link to a blog that suggested choosing 3 words that as a small business owner or manager you would like to focus on in 2012 for your veterinary business (My Three Words for 2012 - Veterinary Manager Advisor).  As I mentioned, one of my words is in fact ‘FOCUS’.

Unsubscribe..... unsubscribe.....unsubscribe!

Like many small business owners managing time and all my commitments has always been a challenge. I’m trying to run a business, be a mum to 2 children and 2 dogs and a partner to 1 husband.  This involves an incredibly complicated programme of commitments for school, sporting, music, dance, exercise, cubs/scouts and friends.  Now I know one of my problems is that I just can’t stop myself from getting involved (although I am getting better) and I rarely do anything by halves but one of my aims for 2012 is to really focus on Vetanswers and make it a success.

So, for me, this means removing as much unnecessary ‘stuff’ as possible that stops me from focusing on my business. Working from home also unfortunately comes with its own range of distractions.  I have considered building a windowless box to work in since pretty much anything can distract me from my work. For example after dropping children off to school, a typical day may include:

Hmm better put some washing on...

Think I’m a bit hungry/thirsty...

Anyone commented on my Facebook posts yet?

Better just check that weather radar again...

Looks like a storm coming – better get the washing off the line...

That’s an interesting Tweet – now I need to read the article, post it on FB, re-tweet it and add it to my newsletter.

I’ll just check my emails.  Great - a special deal on 4 nights in Fiji – might look at that & dream about going, better check out the resort while I’m at it just in case I become rich over night.

Oh look – it’s nearly time to pick the kids up from school – where did my day go??

So now you see the reason for my need to focus!

Over the Christmas break it has also become glaringly obvious how clogged my email inbox has become with lots of emails that are not important to Vetanswers – in any way at all!  So over the last 2 days I’ve been involved in some major unsubscribing action:

Good-bye Smiggles special deals (how did that get there?)

Good-bye Vintage Cellars (that one hurt!)

No, I don’t want a hair makeover or weight reduction or non-surgical facelift thanks Spreets/Living Social/Scoopon (how rude!)

And although that resort in Fiji/Hawaii/Bali looks amazing - we won’t be going anywhere unless I can focus.

Unsubscribe, unsubscribe, unsubscribe.

So is it working?  I’ll let you know over the next week or so if the reduction in unnecessary ‘noise’ in my inbox is helping me to focus.

My next step is to apply tighter controls to the time I spend on social media and once I’ve worked out how to limit my access to the weather radar & forget about the washing I should be focused like a laser!

Clearly I need all the help I can get – so tell me in the comments section below what are your favourite ways to keep your focus?
