If You Change Nothingnothing Will Change

Last week my blog post was all about where you wanted to be in 2016 and setting goals to make sure you got there.

If you missed it, you can click here to read 'What will you be doing differently in 2016?

If you’re happy with your work, family and personal life then congratulations – you’ve probably already been working over the years to achieve your goals. If however you look back on 2015 and there are some aspects you think could be improved now is a great time to start making some changes.

I mentioned at the end of my last blog post that I was going to be working on my own plan during the week and I would hopefully have something to share with you this week so here’s what I’ve got so far……

Issues from 2015

There are all very brief snapshots as I really didn't think you needed to be burdened with all my problems!

Work: There was never enough time to get projects finished and inefficient work practices meant I seemed to be working seven days a week and still not getting to where I needed to be.

Family: Work had got in the way of family and I was often too irritable and stressed to be enjoying family time (“I really should be working…”), there was never any time to get things organised or jobs done around the house, in the garden, etc as most weekends I was either working or feeling guilty for not working.

Health: A heel spur in the middle of 2015 stopped most of my exercise activity for a few months, a couple of kilos crept on board, I lost my exercise routine and generally felt pretty lousy.

My Goals for 2016

Work/family/health Goals:

(I really couldn't separate these into individual goals as they are impact so much on each other):

  • Start work at 9am
  • Finish work at 5.30pm every night to allow dinner to be ready by 7pm which also gives kids enough time to get sorted and in bed at a decent time
  • No work at night (although I’m writing this at 9.37pm!) so I can be around to help kids with school work, etc. and also so I can get to bed around 10pm
  • No work on weekends so I can enjoy time with my family and work on other family related projects e.g. house, garden, finances (I find when these aren’t done I just get even more stressed)
  • Get up at 6am to walk Nina and also get to the gym at least 3 mornings per week
  • Food for snacks and lunches to be cooked on Monday nights so there are plenty of options for all of our lunches

How have I gone so far this week?

  • I didn’t work at all last weekend much to my family’s amazement (although I am planning on working for a few hours this weekend to get on top on my inbox - that’s what I get for having a break from my computer over Christmas!)
  • I don’t think I’ve started work at 9am yet although our family routines haven’t been fully sorted out for 2016 yet either
  • Tonight is the first night I’ve worked after dinner this week
  • I’ve only managed to get up at 6.30am (6am might take some getting used to for a night owl like me!) but I have already been to the gym three times this week.
  • I have stopped work by 6pm each night to get dinner ready

Achieving the goals I’ve set for myself is definitely a work in progress but all I know is that what I was doing in 2015 just wasn’t working…..and the one thing I can’t get out of my head…..

“If you change nothing, nothing will change”

So what about you? What needs to change in your life and what goals will you be setting for 2016? I've shared my goals - why not share yours in the comments section below?
