This Is Why Ive Chosen To Work In This Industry 2

A sad situation this week reminded me why I've chosen to work in the veterinary industry......

I’m not sure if you know or not…but I’m not a veterinarian….or a veterinary nurse.  I have a business degree majoring in HR and before getting involved in the veterinary industry I had worked in the banking, hospitality and retail industries. Then, somewhat by chance, I found myself providing some resources and running a couple of workshops on HR related topics for some veterinary groups.….and over 15 years later, I’m still here.

I’m often asked why I’ve chosen to work in this particular industry and although there are quite a few reasons my first response is always “Because of the people that work in it”.

And I’ve just been reminded of that this week.

A friend who works in a veterinary practice had to make the decision to say goodbye to one of her beloved canine companions yesterday. Although he had a few health issues he was still a relatively young dog so this decision was unexpected and as these decisions always are, extremely difficult.

I sent her a private message on FB to say how sorry I was to hear her news. She responded by saying thank you and mentioned how difficult her day had been as after she had realised that euthanasia may be the only option for her boy, she then had to assist with the euthanasia and grief counselling for a client. Then after she had made the final decision, she then had to spend the rest of the afternoon answering the phone and assisting consults as if all was normal in her world.

I just can’t think of many other industries where someone would need do this as part of their normal job and I suspect do it without seeing how extraordinary it is.

I also know that this is not a rare or unusual situation and that most likely every person working in the veterinary industry would have done exactly the same thing.

And this is why I have chosen to work in this industry.

So thank you for all of the sacrifices you make to work with animals and their owners – you’re a pretty special bunch of people.

PS. I did send this blog post to the friend mentioned in the post to check that she was ok with me publishing it - obviously she was!

Clearly our clients think so too. I was thinking as I wrote a sympathy card to a client, how ironic it was.....and then another client does this lovely thing for me - I received a hug and a lovely, beautifully presented bunch of roses from the clients garden as an offer of condolence.
