We reached out to veterinary professionals in 2024 to gain insights into their perceptions of the key challenges facing the industry, their personal experiences, and their predictions for industry trends in 2025. Through the collection of over 120 responses, we have curated the content for this invaluable eBook.
The purpose of conducting this comprehensive survey was to extract meaningful findings and draw informed conclusions. By incorporating valuable suggestions and recommendations, we aim to shape forward-thinking practices within the veterinary industry.

We received responses from 126 veterinary professionals in Australia and New Zealand:
23% were Practice Owners
22% were Practice Managers
29% were Veterinarians
26% were Administrators, Clinic Coordinators, Veterinary Technicians and Nurses

1. The top industry challenges facing veterinary professionals
There were eleven top challenges uncovered for 2025, including the following top three:
- Economic conditions and cost of living
- Global veterinary shortage and staff recruitment/retention
- Staff burnout and mental health
2. Practical solutions to help overcome these challenges
We asked veterinary professional to share their suggestions on how they plan to address the challenges and frustrations facing their practices in 2025.
A few of the innovations you’ll find in the eBook include solutions for staff resourcing issues, improving the health and wellbeing of staff and improving practice financials.
3. Top frustrations and trend focus areas
Feedback in our survey confirms that staffing-related issues are one of the greatest frustrations for veterinary professionals. Common themes included being unable to attract staff to smaller regional practices or find quality staff across various roles.
Other vet industry frustrations were negative media perceptions and working in times of economic uncertainty.
The respondents were also happy to share ideas on how to overcome these challenges and frustrations, including ideas on staff resourcing, staff communications, staff health and wellbeing, learning and development, practice financials and client communication and retention.
4. Opportunities to thrive in 2025
While our survey reveals that the veterinary industry is expecting headwinds to continue in 2025, respondents are clearly adapting to the current environment by looking for opportunities to improve their practice performance in a number of key areas.
These include improving their client service offerings, a greater focus on caring for staff and investing in technology to improve practice productivity and efficiency.
5. The top investment areas for practices looking to grow in 2025
55% of respondents indicated that learning and development for themselves and their staff is a priority, with the same percentage flagging a greater focus on staff-related priorities in 2025.
Respondents also indicated that further investment in marketing and attracting clients is high on their priority list.
6. The role technology plays in a forward-thinking practice
Adopting technology was a strong theme in our survey of veterinary professionals. Key highlighted opportunities include moving to web-based/cloud-based, better use of forms and automation, and the use of AI.

Overall, our survey confirms that the veterinary industry will likely continue to face headwinds in 2025. Despite this, it’s positive to see how many innovative solutions are being implemented by practices to help solve these presented challenges.
