Below, we explore the latest research on using medicinal cannabis to support the health and wellbeing of birds.
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid from the cannabis plant, interacts with the endocannabinoid system, offering therapeutic properties. While research on CBD’s effects in humans and dogs is well-documented, its application in avian medicine is still in the early stages. Initial studies are promising, but more research is needed to fully understand its potential for birds.
A study on budgerigars suggests that birds have at least one type of cannabinoid receptor (CB1) involved in memory, vision, pain perception, reproductive behaviours, and motor function. This indicates that CBD could potentially treat various conditions in different bird species.
A notable study in Hispaniolan Amazon parrots showed that CBD was well-tolerated at doses much higher than those used in dogs, with no adverse effects. This suggests that birds might metabolise cannabinoids differently from mammals, indicating the need for species-specific studies.
In this study, birds were given hemp extract without food. Since CBD and THC are lipophilic, coadministration with a high-lipid meal could improve their solubility and absorption. This finding warrants further research to explore CBD’s optimal administration and therapeutic applications in birds.
Despite the limited scientific evidence, bird owners and veterinarians report positive outcomes from CBD treatment. Following the success of CBD in managing various symptoms and conditions in dogs, some bird owners have tried CBD under veterinary supervision.
Anecdotal reports suggest that CBD may help birds suffering from:
However, these benefits need to be confirmed through clinical studies.
One of the most discussed areas of CBD use in veterinary medicine is pain management. Many bird owners are curious if medicinal cannabis can alleviate their bird’s pain and improve their quality of life. Given its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties in other species, CBD may offer pain relief for birds without psychoactive effects.
CBD Vets Australia has supported Australian vets in administering CBD oil to a Pink Galah with inflammation, loss of appetite, and digestive issues and an Indian Ringneck Parrot experiencing distressing feather plucking. In both cases, disease symptoms decreased, and well-being improved.
CBD Vets Australia is committed to advancing the health and well-being of animals by collaborating with vets to determine the right dosage and method of administration of CBD for all pets.
