A new free online learning program has launched to help Australia’s equine and mixed-practice veterinarians put antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) principles into daily practice, building on the 2026 release of Australia’s first Equine Antimicrobial Prescribing Guidelines.
Created by the AMR Vet Collective in conjunction with world-leading specialist clinicians and educators, and with ongoing AgriFutures support, the new program is a flagship AMS training resource for any veterinarian who sees horses in Australia. Content is scoped for the full spectrum of practitioners, from practical tips and downloadable tools for ambulatory mixed-practice vets who see only occasional equine patients, through to nuanced discussions of considerations to support refinement of existing AMS frameworks and policies for specialist equine hospitals.
The program covers four key areas with a focus on medicine, surgery, reproduction, and infection prevention and control. Key messages have been curated through modern educational design tools with material delivered using videos, podcasts, interactive case studies, animations and text-based content. Participation in the program contributes towards veterinarians’ continuing education requirements.
Veterinarians completing the program can expect to build the knowledge needed to update stewardship and biosecurity protocols in line with current best practice — helping preserve the effectiveness of the antibiotics available to the profession.
The program is free, accessible anytime online, and includes downloadable and printable clinical tools, alongside client-facing resources to support conversations with horse owners and foaling attendants about antimicrobial resistance.
Though designed specifically for the Australian context, much of the content is applicable in international settings or has been informed by evidence generated from Europe and North America. As with other online learning resources developed by the AMR Vet Collective, global reach of this new program is expected.
Its official launch took place on the Horses’ birthday, August 1st – because what better present could we give our equine patients than the gift of ongoing access to effective antimicrobials?
