This weekend, we are holding what is possibly my favourite event from our Accelerate Mastermind Group program: our Personal Mastery event.
It’s all about Why you do what you do, why you think what you think and why you feel what you feel.
By the end of the event, our AMG Community will leave knowing themselves better and understanding their family, friends, and team in a way they never did before.
One of our Key Concepts from this event is Understanding The 6 Human Needs.
In the whirlwind of veterinary practice, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations, but running a vet practice isn’t just about clinical care. It’s about understanding what drives your team and your clients.
When you understand these needs, it makes for a more harmonious and effective work environment.
Humans are wired to avoid pain. These survival mechanisms often manifest as fears, which drive much of our behaviour, both personally and professionally.
At the core of many behaviours lies a fundamental question: Am I enough?
This fear can lead us to seek approval from others, such as clients or colleagues. By recognizing this in yourself and others, you can build stronger and more compassionate relationships.
Certainty means feeling safe, avoiding pain, and ensuring comfort. For your practice, it could be having control over your work environment, strict protocols, or comprehensive checklists. While certainty creates a stable and predictable practice, it’s essential to balance this need to prevent it from leading to stress and burnout among your staff.
We all need a bit of excitement and new challenges, and people crave surprises to avoid boredom and stagnation. For your team, mix up their tasks and offer growth opportunities. For your clients, try new treatments and some fun marketing ideas.
Everyone wants to feel special and important. You can show your team they matter by celebrating their achievements and listening to their ideas. Encouraging them to take ownership of their roles can also make them feel valued.
Build strong bonds with your team and clients. Fostering a sense of community among your staff and building strong relationships with your clients is important. You can achieve this by organising regular team activities, having regular meetings to share ideas and feedback and creating a welcoming space for your clients.
Growth is about personal and professional development. Make your practice a place for continuous learning, set goals and mentor programs to meet this need in your team and clients.
Finally, contribution is all about the need to give back. Whether it’s community service, client education, or simply going the extra mile to care for your patients, when your team feels they are making a positive impact, it fosters a deeper sense of fulfilment and meets this need.
By understanding these needs, you can create a thriving practice where both care and team morale excel. Balancing these needs for yourself, your team and your clients to get the best results.
Using insights from my book ‘The Abundant Practice’, you can transform your veterinary practice.
