While an employment contract is important to establish employee/employer relationships, it should be supported by policies and procedures that provide employees with an understanding of expected behavioural and performance standards.
A policy outlines boundaries, rules, obligations, and entitlements. It also explains how team members should perform their work, conduct themselves, and maintain the safety of themselves and others.
Once policies are in place, it is essential that they are regularly reviewed and updated in line with legislative changes and requirements. It is also best practice to have written confirmation that your team members have read and understood what has been provided to them – and to discuss them regularly.
The real test of your policies and procedures is when you must rely on them in the event of employee issues such as poor performance or inappropriate behaviour.
Daily I am reminded of the importance of policies when I see Fair Work decide in favour of an employee during a case as a business….
