You worked hard for your veterinary degree—bloody hard, which is something that is often missed by your clients who complain about the bill. Then, you had to work hard to pay off your student loan and work to become the best veterinarian you can be. The hard work continues as you start your own practice, learn to manage staff and cash flow, negotiate leases, deal with suppliers, and work out how to stay busy using marketing, all while treating animals.
Most days are good, but now and again, the thought, “Is it all worth it?” creeps in as you imagine a life with no responsibilities or demands. This is perfectly natural and happens to the best of us.
For me, I imagine getting on my motorcycle and riding off into the sunset. Then, I realise I only have a motorcycle because I don’t give up on tough days, and I live in a country where the sunset is amazing almost every day. But I wanted to research how amazing our lives are. We all know anecdotally how good we have it, but does it stack up statistically?
The saying “Money can’t buy you happiness” dates back to the 1700s and is attributed to the struggling philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. And there is probably a reason why he struggled: he was Wrong!!
Money bought me my Triumph Motorcycle, and that brings me happiness. Money buys me a bottle of Shadowfax Chardonnay on a Sunday lunchtime, and that brings me happiness. And as much as the cheeky smile from my daughter costs nothing, the fact that I put her through private education brings me happiness.
After asking ChatGPT many questions, the chart below was compiled, and as it shows, we already live in a country with some of the world’s wealthiest people. It puts things into perspective when someone you know is envious of another person getting a fancy car or a holiday home. I am fortunate to have friends who are massively wealthier than I am, but their wealth is a rounding error when you are already in the 99.9% wealthiest people on the planet.
So, what about freedom? We like to complain about our politicians, but at least we can sack them every three or four years and we don’t have some egotistical half-wit controlling our lives. Did you know only 8% of the world lives in a true democracy? For all its flaws, the Westminster System provides more freedom and less tyranny than any other system in human history.
I could go on, but I am sure you get the point. On those days when it all seems too hard, or you get frustrated by something or someone petty, it’s worth taking a look at the rest of the world and realising it doesn’t get any better than we have it. The Australian author Donald Horne coined the phrase “The Lucky Country” back in 1964, and without trivialising those who genuinely have difficulties, for the vast majority of us, Donald understated our way of living.
So, what does this have to do with the sale of Veterinary Practices? Well, the day will come when you have served your community enough, and it’s time to enjoy the rewards of all your years of looking after others. When that time happens, here at Ray White Practice Sales, we will take our role of getting you the very best outcome as seriously as you have taken your role in looking after the lives of thousands of animals.
