SEO is only one part of digital marketing. An integrated marketing strategy helps people find your business, trust your expertise and choose your services.
If your business is anything like ours, you’ve been contacted countless times by marketing agencies telling you, “We’ll get you to number one on Google.” It is so rife that our business development manager, Pete, receives over 20 email messages each week suggesting the same thing, and we are a marketing agency. They obviously don’t do their homework. In fact, Pete received one this week with obvious cut-and-paste messaging that our website is “missing critical SEO, your rankings are poor, and your competitors are getting ahead’. This approach was particularly amusing to us. We have a team of SEO experts, a dedicated analytics department and are fully aware of what our competitors are doing and not doing.
I am writing this blog because the message from these low-profile agencies is always the same: if you can rank first on Google, your marketing problems will disappear. While it sounds compelling, it’s also an oversimplification and very misleading.
The reality is that digital marketing has evolved well beyond a single search ranking. While search visibility remains an important component of any marketing strategy, it is only one part of a much larger ecosystem that determines whether people discover your business, trust your expertise and ultimately choose to work with you. Modern search itself is changing, with buyers increasingly using AI-powered search alongside traditional Google searches to research clinics, products and suppliers.
Ranking is not the destination
Imagine your business appears first on Google for an important search term. Now ask yourself:
- Does your website immediately establish credibility?
- Does it clearly explain why you’re different?
- Does it answer the visitor’s questions?
- Does it make taking the next step easy?
- Does it reinforce your brand’s quality?
If the answer to those questions is “no”, then achieving a higher ranking has simply delivered more visitors to an experience that doesn’t convert. You’ve spent a great deal of time and money on an ego boost. In our business, we have an important saying. Visibility creates opportunity – Credibility creates customers. The two are not the same thing.
Your marketing should be an integrated system
Marketing is a diverse system, not a collection of tactics. One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is treating digital marketing as a series of disconnected activities. SEO is handled by one provider, social media by another, and the website is managed by someone else. Often, we see email marketing activity only happens occasionally, while advertising runs whenever sales slow down.
Each activity may have merit on its own, but without a unified strategy, they rarely reinforce one another. The businesses achieving sustainable growth aren’t chasing individual tactics. They’re building integrated marketing systems where every component strengthens the others. Brand positioning influences website messaging. Website content improves search visibility. Search generates enquiries. Email marketing nurtures relationships. Social media reinforces authority. Performance reporting identifies what’s actually driving commercial outcomes rather than simply generating activity.
When these elements are part of a marketing strategy, the result isn’t simply more traffic. It’s stronger market appeal. Commitment decisions are built on trust, particularly within the veterinary industry. Pet owners rarely choose a clinic based solely on who appears first in search results. They compare websites, reviews, services, qualifications, facilities, communication and overall professionalism before making an appointment.
The same applies to veterinary industry partners. Practice owners and managers researching suppliers, wholesalers or service providers don’t click the first website they find. They spend time evaluating expertise, comparing options and assessing whether a business genuinely understands the veterinary profession. Every digital touchpoint contributes to that decision.
Your website. educational content. case studies, reviews, your brand. search visibility, email communication and the consistency of your messaging across every platform collectively build confidence long before someone contacts your business.
The danger of chasing bright shiny objects
Marketing trends come and go. Yesterday it was Facebook likes, then Instagram followers, and next TikTok. We’ve been around long enough to know that tomorrow it may well be something else. Businesses that constantly chase the latest marketing trend often spend significant time and money without building any lasting commercial value.
This happens when the tactic becomes the objective rather than the strategy. It is important to understand that search is still very important. If your business can’t be found, it’s difficult to be considered. However, the purpose of search optimisation has changed. It’s no longer about manipulating keywords or chasing rankings for the sake of a monthly report. Today’s search success comes from producing genuinely useful content, clearly explaining your expertise, structuring your website properly, building authority over time, and ensuring your business is understandable to traditional search engines (Google) and emerging AI-powered search platforms.
In other words, good marketing creates good SEO, not the other way around.
