As previously mentioned, I was recently invited to attend a three-day workshop in Sydney that was part of Diederik Gelderman’s six-month ‘Easy Veterinary Marketing’ course, and out of all the information that was discussed, the one that stood out the most to me was this:
My brain is constantly coming up with ‘great’ ideas. I then get excited about working on these ‘great’ ideas…until another ‘great’ idea pops into my head, and off I go again, which means that many of my projects never get completed. This is perhaps not so much of an issue if you have a team working for you, as once you have a project up and running, you can then pass it to one of the team members to complete. But I don’t have a team – there’s only me, so if I launch into another project without finishing the first…nothing gets finished.
If you’re nodding your head or are all too familiar with this situation then this is what you need to do…
It’s probably going to be a very long list, but that’s okay.
Select the three most essential or important goals or projects from your list and write them on a second piece of paper.
Now comes the most important part….
No, don’t “file it away for later”… literally throw the piece of paper in the bin.
When you’ve achieved these three goals or projects, write another list of things you want to achieve and follow the process all over again.
So why do you have to throw away your main list?
Why can’t you just file it away for future reference?
Because if you do keep it, it’s highly likely that one day you’ll start to get a bit bored with your ‘Top 3 projects’, and you won’t be able to stop yourself having a quick look at your ‘big list’. Before you know it, you’ll be starting to work on another project before you’ve completed your Top 3, and history will repeat itself! You’ll have yet another half-finished project as you get lost in the excitement of starting yet another one.
